The Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh T.D. recently launched the National Employer Survey 2018. This survey has identified the high levels of satisfaction that Irish employers have with graduate recruits. The National Employer Survey, published in January 2019, was jointly undertaken by the Higher Education Authority, Quality and Qualifications Ireland and SOLAS. Responses to the survey came from 760 organisations, 535 of which had recruited recent graduates from the higher education and further education sectors. As CTEC delivers FET education programmes, we thought that we would look at employers satisfaction levels with FET graduates in this blog.
- Employers indicated high satisfaction levels with FET graduates receiving 84% overall satisfaction rate.
- FET graduates scored highest for working effectively with others at 89%, effective verbal communication at 85% and working effectively on their own at 85%.
- They also received strong satisfaction rates in the area of technology and computer literacy achieving 83% rating.
- FET graduates were on a par satisfaction rating with higher education graduates when it came to effective verbal communication with both groups receiving a 85% satisfaction rating from Irish employers who took part in the survey.
According to the survey report, 25% of Irish employers taking part had employed FET graduates during 2018 and employers hiring FET graduates are more likely to be involved in sectors such as construction, wholesale and retail trade, human health and social work activities, transportation and storage. These results mirror the need for QQI programmes in the healthcare and childcare sector currently being delivered at CTEC. The report also identified the predominant barrier to recruitment of FET graduates cited by participating employers as a lack of current job vacancies with 38% having no vacancies at FET graduate level.
The survey report highlights that Irish employers recognise the benefits of employing FET graduates with 23% of employers indicating that they will need to employ people with FET graduate skills over the next 3 to 5 years.
